I hate that I have had to start caring hard about politics.  I hate that I have had to start researching every damn meme I see, every article I read, every quote because I need to sort out FACTS as best I can from a social and media system designed to confuse and terrify with salacious headlines and clickbait.  I hate that I want so badly to speak with my voice but am silent because there is so much coming at me that I can’t even understand ONE thing before 75 more things hit me in the face!

It has always been the job of the politician to represent their constituents, to show up at the job they were elected to do, to understand that job and make sure that the people were cared for, that the constitution of our country was upheld, to fight the battles that most of us are neither equipped to fight or care to.

We, the people, have HIRED the representatives in our government with our VOTES.  Some of us have put more of an effort into that right and responsibility than others who just blindly vote party lines because it’s what their parents taught them to do, vote on one issue they heard about in passing but were too lazy to comprehend fully, or worse, don’t vote at ALL!

I hear people say “I don’t watch news” or “I don’t like to get involved in politics”.  Well guess what?  Politics is getting involved in you.  Every. Single. Day.  It is your social security, your veterans’ and disability benefits, your fire station, your police force, the safety of the food you eat and the air you breathe. It is the safety net in catastrophe. It’s the education of the children who will be tomorrow’s leaders. It is the safety and mere existence of the flights you take and the roads you drive on. So whether you like it, have time for it or CARE ABOUT IT, you need to start.

Currently, our Congress is being neutered, and they have disgracefully allowed it, bending to the whims of a madman.  Our Supreme Court is corrupt and serving its own agenda and not the agenda of the American people or the laws that they took an OATH to.  Our President thinks he is a King.  A God.  With one hand, ignoring all laws and process, appointing an unelected maniac BILLIONAIRE to dismantle and gut indiscriminately our embedded institutions, and with the other greedily reaps the financial gain as he strips us of our own. Then, spends his days at our largest sporting events spending WE THE PEOPLE’S money to be paraded around like a monarch waving from his bullet-proof chariot.

Right now we face a crisis in this country like we never have before.  One that requires ALL of us to make sure our elected officials not only represent US but speak for US, for the things we value, LOUDLY, QUICKLY, before everything we have held dear in this supposed democracy is gone forever.  That is NOT hyperbole. We are called upon now to do what it takes to fix this mess.  And I get it, WHAT THE HELL IS THAT??  I don’t know.  But SOMETHING.  ANYTHING.  Because we are all sitting on the couch watching as the most powerful free nation on earth devolves into chaos and oligarchy.  Where we accept a dictator to rule over us while we wait for someone else to get up and change the channel.

We all need to learn to be informed and act accordingly on that information.  It is our duty and responsibility as citizens of a democracy.  No longer can we go about our lives oblivious to the manipulation around us.  No more can we turn a blind eye to suffering or injustice.  WE are the hope.  WE are the ones who will right this ship.  So find your own niche and contribute to this fight in some way.

So I will use this “Presidents Day” to commit that from here on out I am going to use my personal power, writing, my voice, to pull an issue from the fishbowl and deal with it, research it and then put it out there.

I have never lived in a world where my right to vote, as a woman, was threatened. Until now. And I am here to ring the alarm bell.  For weeks I have been stewing in my outrage over the SAVE ACT which has now passed the House and is on its way to the Senate.  Although it is being disguised as a “national security” bill to quell supposed fears of non-existent illegal voting, what it really does is strategically and purposefully disenfranchise millions of voters, most of them women.  First of all, it is already illegal for non-citizens to vote, and election audits have proven that attempts at illegal voting by non-citizens are extremely rare despite unsubstantiated claims to the contrary. Either way, the law already exists and the penalties for illegal voting are harsh.  So this bill does nothing new for that effort.  It is all smoke and mirrors to distract us from its more sinister intention. What it does do, is essentially create a poll tax for the 79% of w...
Sometimes when I am having trouble finding my words I look to what I would say to my nephew.  As I sat in my own struggle with how to proceed with this blog, this is what came to me.  These are my words to him to be read when he is old enough to understand them... My precious little man. I promised myself that every time something major happened in our world or in your life I would write about it for you.  Like a time capsule of things you were too small to remember.  But these last few months have been unspeakable.  I have not been able to put any of it into words.  But it is my obligation and duty to do this so that someday you can read these words and know what was going on around you as you grew and studied and became part of this world.  These words are probably more important than any birthday timestamp or milestone mention.  They are the very words of our precious and fragile democracy and the freedom you were born to, the freedom that ha...
